Pros:
- Blocks out noisey upstairs neighbors.
- Unlike over-ear solutions, these are comfortable enough to sleep in. I often sleep with them in my ears without playing anything.
Cons:
- Earwax is sometimes a problem. One time I thought one ear bud was broken, but it turns out that sound had been completely blocked off by earwax that managed to get stuck deep inside. Removed with needle-nose tweezers.
- No tactile identification of which is the left/right ear bud. They both look and feel identical.
Overall, I'm happy they block out noise and still work after a year. I don't have any strong opinions about sound quality or other features.
But a word or two about the noise isolation is necessary. These come with three sets of inserts, in three different sizes, and it will take some experimentation to figure out which ones are right for the individual user. If the insert is too small for the ear canal, the noise isolation will be almost nonexistent, and if it's too big, the earphones will be too uncomfortable to wear for any length of time. (I suspect that some people will find them uncomfortable in any case, because they have to go deep into the ear canal.) Not only that, but the user needs to follow the insertion instructions to the letter to get the right fit. But once that's done, the noise isolation is absolutely spectacular. My rough guess is that these filter out approximately 90% of ambient sound. In fact, I'm not sure I'd want to wear these walking down a busy city street -- not that that's a concern in these pandemic times -- because I might not hear a truck that's about to run me over. I can't speak to their build quality or durability, because I haven't had them long enough, but I've heard good things about Etymotic in that regard, and the company's customer support is good. So...I give these my highest possible recommendation, but with an important qualification: They take some getting used to at first, and a bit of fiddling every time they're inserted -- and some people are likely to find them uncomfortable for long-term use -- so I'd suggest buying them only from a seller that is prepared to accept returns.
I hope this is helpful.

♦♦ Active Noise Cancellation vs Passive Noise Isolation ♦♦
• Passive Noise Isolation -- is what happens when you put earplugs in, and EVERYTHING is blocked around you. This is what Etymotics do. They're best known for making hearing aids and industrial strength ear plugs. The MK5's are good for 36-42 decibels of noise reduction, which is immense. Consider that your average pair of ear plugs blocks 28-36 decibels. There's only one problem with this method. Depending on the tip you require for a perfect fit, it can be very hard on the ear canal. Finding the perfect tips is difficult, and you'll almost always have some level of raw irritation simply because of how deep the tips need to fit.
That's assuming you're using triple flanged headphones (which come with the MK5). Some people cut the triple into a double-flanged for more comfort. That's always an option. Personally, I kept the triple flanged. It hurt at first, but now it barely bothers me. I think it's a "get used to it" sort of thing. For me, that silence is worth it.
• Active Noise Cancellation -- This is what you get when you have those BOSE QUIET lines (and their many equivalents). They work by actively using sound frequencies to counter-act steady noises like: wind, airplane engines, bus engines, traffic zooming by. The catch is, it's less good at blocking ALL noise, like babies crying or dogs barking. They block less decibels overall. Another issue is the strange sense of pressure they MAY exert. I own two pairs and have never had this, but many people who own the Bose Quiet Comfort line complain of this pressure. Lastly, when all is dead quiet, you can hear a quiet "hissssss," which is the frequency I was talking about.
• What does this all mean? Well, I own three pairs of "noise cancelling" headphones: Bower & Wilkins PX and Sony WI1000X's. The Etymotics are hundreds of dollars cheapers and are THE best killers of noise. My two active noise cancelling headphones do a good job if I'm riding the bus, but they don't allow for absolute silence in many situations. Whenever I need to do some serious studying, I always reach for the Etymotics. However, if you want an amazing music experience and are looking for something to travel frequently with, I'd recommend researching active noise cancelling options.
♦♦ SOUND Quality ♦♦
Here's where you decide on the price you wanna pay. The MK5's are one of the cheaper offerings at $88. They are lacking bass, but honestly, I think they sound pretty good overall. Frankly, I have other headphones for listening to music; these were for the specific purpose of replacing earplugs with something effective.
If you want better sound quality AND the type of noise cancellation offered by Etymotics, look into the HF5's. They're $100 more, but people say they much better rounded.
♦♦ Conclusion ♦♦
I would definitely buy these again. They're the best true noise cancelling headphones you can get for a reasonable price. Say goodbye to earplugs! However, I again stress, you'll have to look into ear buds that are somewhat comfortable. You don't want raw ears 24/7.
