The B+D isn't digital, the timer doesn't pause when you remove the basket to turn food or to shake it, and so far as I know, accessories for 2-qt air fryers don't exist, but the aayu baking pan will definitely fit it, and is a great addition. I've ordered a 2nd aayu pan in fact (available on Amazon.) I'm happy with my B+D and a 2-qt is the right size for me.
I am using it more and more, even for just heating leftovers, and it does a great job with those; better than the microwave. Last night, I put an entree and a side in and topped it with the top half of a homemade hamburger bun, (cut side up), and gave it 10 minutes after I'd preheated it to 300 degrees. Everything was perfect, and that was very appreciated since I am down with my yearly URI at the moment. Cleanup is minimal and I've only had to soak the basket once, and that only took 10 minutes, and everything then came off with a sponge.
I've made roasted bananas, Scalloped Rutabaga, Pork Chunks slightly breaded with Shake 'n Bake, or with panko, Scotch Eggs, Toasted Ravioli, Minted Lamb Burgers, Veggie Burgers, Air-Fried Portabellas, and everything has turned out great. I have had the occasional failure, but sometimes, that's due to the cookbook I've used.
I've had trouble finding good cookbooks written by Americans, with American food in them. I can recommend "my Black+Decker 2-Liter Oil Free Air Fryer Cookbook" by Sandy Fairfield. It has a nice range of recipes, and they are written clearly. It doesn't have pictures, except on the front and back covers (color) and black and white ones at the beginning of each chapter. This is not available in a Kindle edition, but is a paperback. Amazon carries it.
I'd also highly recommend "The Air Fryer Bible" by Susan Laborde and Elizabeth Hickman. They are two Southern girls, and their recipes are varied, clearly written, with ingredients we have and are familiar with, and for food that we will eat. This is an Amazon Kindle edition that I pre-ordered for myself for Christmas, and it was worth it.
I can very highly recommend the B+D Purifry 2-Liter Air Fryer. There are a lot of foods that I like that I don't cook because I have a black thumb when it comes to deep frying, and I always use a thermometer. Now I can make these things and save calories, fat, straining and keeping used oil, or disposing of it properly, I don't have to clean the stove, and best of all, I don't get popped by hot grease, my glasses aren't covered with grease spots, and the kitchen doesn't smell of fried foods for days.
We have just the two of us, and usually it's plenty of room for the both of us. Every now and then we have enough to cook (fish AND fries for 2, for example), and it's just too much to fit in there (the fries won't crisp up if overcrowded)...because of that, we're thinking it might be worth getting a second. (If you have a bigger family than just 2, you might want to opt for a bigger one...or for getting multiple)
Ease of use, storage and cleaning highlight my benefits.
This is a sturdy and reliable product that can quickly be used right out of the box. It is easy to clean and does a good job of cooking specific items like french fries, chicken and other items that may typically be microwaved.
The real value here is as a healthier option to stove top/frying and a tastier option to microwave.
Pro's
- ease of setup, use and cleaning
- minimal counter space
- good option to microwave/frying
Con
Only downside for me is i could very well OD on french fries
Overall it was a very close competition. In the end, the Philips won for best taste due to the fact that the Black & Decker never lost it's slight plastic/chemical smell in the 3 weeks that we used it, which tinted all the food with a similar taste.
Here were our criteria ranked from most important to least:
Taste
Easy to Clean
Price
Capacity
Speed of cooking
Temperature Range
Accessories
Design
Taste & Clean: The top two categories were the main contenders. As I mentioned above, the Philips won out for best taste. It cooked food evenly and to perfection without any hint of chemical taste from the get-go, while the B&D (while still cooking nice and evenly) didn't lose it's chemical taste.
That being said, the B&D was FAR easier to clean in the sink. Both bowl and basket units were entirely non-stick and the bowl unit was completely smooth at the bottom. The Philips was more of pain to clean than I hoped. Food sticks to the basket mesh pretty readily and it requires a bristle brush to clean (pad sponges leave bits stuck in the mesh). The raised contours of the bowl also make cleaning a bit of a chore. Both units do very well in the dishwasher, but take up a lot of room.
Price was the 3rd factor. The B&D is about half the price of the Phillips 9220, making it a pretty decent value. Unfortunately because TASTE was the ultimate deciding factor, it did not win out.
Capacity was about the same for both units. I found the Philips to be slightly more efficient simply because of the more square shape. That being said, the B&D includes a divider that allows you to pack in more food. The Philips unit has a double-decker accessory you can buy that works better that the divider IMO,
Speed of cooking went to the Philips, but only by a slight margin. For instance, chicken thighs would take about 17-20 minutes in the B&D, while they would take 15-17 minutes in the Philips. The B&D also has a slightly higher temperature range (400) vs. the Philips 390.
The Philips comes with a wide range of accessories available for purchase (I have not tried most of them), while the B&D does not.
Design: We bought the white versions of both units, which I am a big fan of. They look much cleaner than the glossy black which shows oil and fingerprints. They are very similar in shape, footprint, and functionality. I have an ever-so-slight preference for the Philips due to the slightly less egg-like shape and pretty metallic handle. The temperature dial knob is a bit finicky, certainly not a deal-breaker.
In summary, I really wanted the B&D to win due to the price and ease of cleaning, but ultimately it did not excel at it's primary job which is cooking delicious food.
